Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader Cedomir Jovanovic says that the government and unions “have swept the problems under the rug”. Delay of the pension system reform will cost hundreds of millions of euros, he added. LDP leader on pension bill “The agreement which will freeze chaos and a terrible loss of the Pension Fund represents a classic way of running away from problems,” Jovanovic pointed out. He stressed that postponing all difficult decisions for 2013 was not a solution. The LDP leader explained that not even a budget subvention worth EUR 2.5bn would be enough to the Pension and Disability Insurance (PIO) Fund and that the state could not cover the present deficit, adding that his party had proposed a pension system reform a year ago. “The government kept quiet, pensioners understood us but they didn’t support us, PUPS (Party of United Pensioners of Serbia) attacked us and it turns out now that the system we have is not sustainable and that pensioners could lose the little they have now,” Jovanovic stressed. The unions, which cannot “step out of the fight for fake socialism”, are ignoring the problems they naturally should deal with and they are fighting for the old pension law which is not working, the LDP leader concluded.
