The German ambassador says he does not believe that anyone from Serbia can justifiably refer to political persecution as a reason for requesting asylum. Wolfram Maas explained that, in accordance with the German legislature, only the persons who are politically persecuted are allowed to exercise the right to asylum in that country. "Serbian nationals have no reason to seek asylum" In an interview for the Belgrade-based daily Politika issued on Saturday, Maas commented on the data from Berlin, according to which, from January to September 2010, a total of 1,948 Serbian citizens filed requests for asylum in Germany, adding that the number significantly increased to 800 in September, compared to 255 in August. Among the asylum seekers from all over the world, there are those who are exposed to persecution due to political, religious beliefs or nationality, but many of them want to stay in Germany primarily due to economic reasons, expecting to enjoy better living conditions, he said. Maas specified that seeking asylum in Germany is not financially advisable, since the country no longer pays out premiums for the return. He pointed out that, at the very least, those who seek asylum in Germany will have to cover the travel expenses on their own. According to Maas, this is only profitable for the people who help asylum seekers to come to Germany and fraudsters making promises to them that no one can keep.
