Unions: Halt new Pension Law Vice President of the Independent Trade Unions of Serbia Vlada Andric told Tanjug news agency that the unions were forced to take this step, due to the lack of readiness the goverment showed to have a dialogue on this issue. "Our proposal did not pass the Social and Economic Council, so we are forced to start collecting signatures, demanding the legislation to be removed from parliament agenda. In accordance with applicable laws, we have to collect at least 100,000 signatures. I hope that we will exceed this number significantly," Andric said at today's meeting with colleagues from other local unions. He announced that the action would be put to work in enterprises, institutions and wherever the unions have their members, but would not shy away from the streets either. The main requirement is to have the Law on Pension and Disability Insurance amended with a protective clause which would say that the average pension in Serbia cannot be less than 60 percent of the average wage. "Indexation of pensions that will begin in 2012 will ultimately reduce the average pension by 25-30 percent”, Andric concluded. Independent Union is also organizing protests and will have another one held in Novi Sad on October 22. Serbian pensioners (FoNet, file)
