Former Kosovo president Fatmir Sejdiu rejected the possibility that northern Kosovska Mitrovica should be the topic of negotiations. He refereed to the talks between Belgrade and Pristina, that are expected to take place. Opposition to "talks on northern KM" According to Sejdiu, the integration of the ethnically divided town should be based on Ahtisaari's plan, and implies the creation of a new municipality in northern part of the town which would be run by Serbs. Serbs north of the Ibar River make up a majority of the population and are rejecting the authority of the Kosovo Albanian government in Pristina. During his visit to southern, ethnic Albanian part of Kosovska Mitrovica on Saturday as president of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Sejdiu stated that such plan is possible since Ahtisaari's project was "approved by all sides". The plan, drawn up by former UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari, envisaged supervised independence for Kosovo, and was never adopted by the UN. Sejdiu, who recently submitted his resignation as Kosovo president, reiterated that "issues affecting the sovereignty of Kosovo cannot be discussed with representatives of official Belgrade". "When I was president, I used to say that Kosovo is ready to negotiate with Serbia on all issues which are in the citizens' best interest, always having in mind that it is a dialogue between two sovereign countries," said he. Sejdiu underscored that representatives of Belgrade and Pristina should discuss freedom of movement, economic cooperation and crime. Fatmir Sejdiu (FoNet, file)
