Head of EU Delegation Vincent Degert and EP rapporteur Jelko Kacin said today that October 5 marked the beginning of Serbian journey towards full EU membership. Degert pointed out that Serbia was clearly determined to become an EU member and accept European values, including the non-discrimination on all bases. "Ousting Milosevic moved Serbia towards EU" Speaking about the changes, Degert paid respect to the Serbian citizens who steered their country towards the EU on October 5 2000. Since that time, support for the EU membership among Serbian citizens has never gone below 60 percent, Degert stated. Serbia from 10 years ago was seen as a big problem, but today we see it as the main factor of stability and prosperity in the region, said Degert. He said that Serbia's European journey could not have been faster, because the country was dealing with the difficult legacy of the past. Kacin said the changes from ten years ago enabled pro-European Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic coming to power, but Serbia's European journey ground to a halt in the wake of March 12 2003, when Djindjic was killed. Commenting on the statement made by Serbian President Boris Tadic that Serbia could become EU member either in 2015 or 2016, Kacin said it was good that the Democratic Party, as the largest party in government, thought faster than others. "If we want Serbia to become the engine of EU convergence in the region, the government must move along, too. But the government cannot accelerate if the strongest party does not show initiative" Kacin said. "I see this as a wake up call not only to the Democratic Party, but also the government, both of which should be more involved," he said. Kacin said that Serbia must create "a critical amount of positive energy" that would allow it to become the engine of development in the region. "That is Serbia we want, that is Serbia we dream and that is Serbia we shall support," he said. Kacin said that Serbia has made a "great leap forward" when it reached an agreement with the EU on the Kosovo resolution, subsequently adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations. According to him, a compromise text was supported by the other major UN member states, and Kosovo itself. "It's a positive message saying the problems of the continent must be solved within Europe," said Kacin.
