The provincial administration is ready to take all appropriate measures if toxic spill from Hungary should threaten Vojvodina, in northern Serbia. The government of Vojvodina announced that the Provincial Inspectorate of Environmental Protection is prepared to produce, together with the Ministry of Environment, a timely response to the threat. North ready to combat toxic spill Regional Secretary for the Environment Slobodan Puzovic said that some 600,000 cubic meters of red sludge escaped the alumina plant in Hungary, the spill hazardous for its high content of heavy metals. He added that four people are known to have died in one of the worst ecological and chemical disasters to affect Hungary, adding that the Hungarian authorities undertook a series of measures to stop a slew of toxic sludge from contaminating key waterways, including the Danube river via its tributary, the Markal river. Since there is an imminent danger that the hazardous substances enter our waterways, the competent provincial Secretariat follows the new situation attentively and has sent a letter to the Public Enterprise Vojvodina sume and the Commander of the Special Nature Reserve Upper Danube, "since the reserve is located in the border zone and inundation zone of the Danube.” A similar letter was forwarded to the Public Enterprise Vode Vojvodine, which monitors water quality in the border area with Hungary, with a request to monitor developments and inform the Secretariat of any changes, it was said in a statement of the Provincial Information Secretariat.
