Opposition DSS leader Vojislav Kostunica said on Tuesday that the biggest progress Serbia made since October 5, 2000 was achieved between 2004 and 2008. Kostunica, who ran on the DOS ticket to defeat Slobodan Milosevic in the Sept. 24, 2000 election and become president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SRJ), was subsequently Serbian prime minister for two terms from 2004 until 2008. "Serbia made most progress 2004-2008" After laying wreaths at a memorial for DSS activist Jasmina Jovanovic, who was fatally injured during the October 5, 2000 protests in Belgrade, Kostunica told reporters that the progress was evident even in the period of the four years from 2000, but that it was much more substantial in the period when he was Serbia's prime minister. “There has been progress even in the four years from 2000, but certain achievements between 2004 and 2008, including the legitimate defense of national interests, which is Kosovo and Metohija within Serbia, cannot be underestimated,” the DSS leader pointed out. He added that it is true that not all of the goals set on October 5 that year have been realized, but stressed that two important ones have - the establishment of a democratic order and of normal life in Serbia. "The only legal heir and guardian of the heritage and freedom (in Serbia) are the people of Serbia and the state of Serbia," Kostunica said.
