British diplomat Andy Sparkes has been appointed new deputy head of the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX) in Kosovo. Sarkes currently serves as UK's ambassador in Pristina. New deputy head of EULEX appointed Sparkes is to replace Roy Reeve. He will assume his duties in mid-October 2010 and was appointed for a period of one year, with a possibility of an extension. EULEX Head Yves De Kermabon said that Sparkes has the necessary experience to serve as deputy head of such a major rule of law operation in a difficult environment. In its statement, EULEX did not specify whether the new appointment means that Sparkes will cease to serve as the ambassador to Kosovo.
