USAID, ISC support civil sector

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Institute for Sustainable Communities Serbia (ISC) have given donations to the civil sector.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Institute for Sustainable Communities Serbia (ISC) have given donations to the civil sector. They signed agreements with 12 organization that promote activism and change of attitude toward protection of children, victims of violence, Roma or disabled persons in traditional and online media. USAID, ISC support civil sector The Civic initiative Mother Courage, which advocates more humane conditions in maternity hospitals, was awarded the funds along with the B92 Fund and center for youth integration Smart Kolektiv. The goal of the USAID contest was to raise social awareness about problems faced by ordinary people, said announcements. The total value of the donation is some USD 250,000, and projects which will be supported also inlcude those dealing with children without parental care, local self-government issues, changes in legislation and protection of environment. “Beside significant results and changes that come with hard work of the civic sector, it happens that these achievements are often under ‘the public radar’ or remain less noticed,” Marilynn Schmidt of USAID stressed. Albert Cevallos of the ISC pointed out the importance of the media in promotion of the award-winning projects. “The projects will cover the entire Serbia in partnership with traditional and local media and some of the projects have entered into partnership with the new media and social networks such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter,” Cevallos explained. Since 2006, USAID has financed 272 projects worth USD 10mn. In addition to that, the ISC has improved skills and knowledge of more than 700 representatives of 180 civil society organizations from across Serbia, through various trainings.
