Officers of MUP's Gendarmerie unit intervened today to reclaim a disputed plot of land in the town of Novi Pazar, in southwestern Serbia. The city administration plans to build a preschool facility there, but members of the Islamic Community in Serbia were at the site yesterday to block the works. Gendarmes intervene in land dispute They claim that the land in question is part of an endowment (waqf). But the Novi Pazar official say they have documents to prove that the town is the sole owner of the plot of building land. The Islamic Community in Serbia today issued a statement strongly condemning the city administration, and accusing it of "violently and illegally" taking over a part of the location. The statement also said there was excessive use of police and Gendarmerie, and added that this represented continued repression against Bosniaks in Sandzak, while the government was described as working with the goal of eliminating all voices who speak against injustice and discrimination.
