Sretko Kalinic has been extradited to Serbia from Croatia early this morning, it has been confirmed. Watch the extradition video. The member of the Zemun Clan criminal group, who was on the run for seven years until he was apprehended in Zagreb this summer, is now in custody at the Special Court in Belgrade. Zemun gangster extradited to Serbia Kalinic was tried and found guilty in absentia in Serbia in two trials: for his role in the 2003 assassination of Zoran Djindjic, and for 19 other murders. He received two sentences of 30 and 40 years in prison. Reports said that the Serbian government sent its plane to Croatia to transfer Kalinic to Belgrade, and that the entire operation was conducted by the Serbian police (MUP) Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ). MUP kept the details of the route and date and time of the extradition secret for security reasons. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said that police expected Kalinic's statements to shed some light on other crimes committed in the past. He specified that this concerns "10 to 20" murders that Kalinic mentioned in his statements to Croatian investigators. Kalinic, born in Zadar in 1974, and nicknamed Zver ("beast") for his cruelty, is the first Croatian citizen to be extradited to Serbia under a recently signed interstate agreement. He was apprehended in Zagreb in early June, when another Zemun Clan fugitive, Milos Simovic, shot and wounded him. Both Kalinic and Simovic are now in jail in Serbia.
