The results of the referendum on the construction of a refinery in Smederevo is the “wind in the sails” that the refinery needs, Radomir Radivojevic said. The Deputy General Director of Comico Oil Radomir Radivojevic told Tanjug that the failed referendum against the construction of the crude oil refinery gives further support to all those who care about the development of the city and Serbia, because Smederevo residents have clearly shown that they support the realization of the project. Referendum “wind in refinery's sails” The investment would be worth USD 250mn and the U.S.-Dutch consortium Comico Oil was the only bidder interested in the project. The referendum on whether the refinery should be built in Smederevo was held on Sunday and failed on account of low voter turnout. Only 11.64 percent, or 11,337 out of 97,366 registered voters, showed up at the 78 polling stations. In order for the referendum to be valid, 48,684 votes were needed. A dispute had arisen among political parties over the Smederevo refinery project, and the opposition proposed settling the matter by way of a referendum. The local administration is in the hands of a coalition made up of the Democratic Party, the Socialist Party of Serbia, the Movement for Smederevo, New Serbia, the Smederevo Democratic Party and the Serbian Renewal Movement. Explaining that the U.S. company's legal team has interpreted the voters' boycott as a “no” to the opposition's demand, Radivojevic said that this shows "that the citizens support the construction of the refinery and the creation of new jobs." It was announced Sunday that the referendum results would be discussed at the next town assembly meeting, at which a decision would be made on how to proceed in the matter. Smederevo
