KFOR clarifies monastery situation

KFOR stated that Kosovo police have not taken over control of the security of the Gracanica monastery yet, adding that the transitional phase has just begun. “We have just started the transition phase. During the transition phase, KFOR will still be fully responsible for guarding Gracanica monastery and Kosovo Police will be present at the sites for training and familiarizing,” the KFOR statement reads. KFOR clarifies monastery situation “After a positive assessment of the Kosovo Police’s skills and experience, this transition phase will move to the execution phase with the handover of the responsibility for guarding of this religious heritage site,” according to the statement, adding that training and skill assessment will be done in close cooperation with EULEX. KFOR would “continue monitoring and advising the Kosovo Police,” and stated that the transition is expected to be completed by the end of August. KFOR announced last week that it would be transferring security activities surrounding the Gracanica monastery to the Kosovo police, while Serbian Orthodox Church officials opposed the abolishment of the KFOR presence, stating that it would put both the holy sites and the clergy in danger.
