Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic told a forum in Novi Sad held as part of the Exit music festival, that the Danube is Serbia's chance for speedier development. Young people, he said, would play a key role in this process. "Danube Serbia's chance for development" The Danube Future Leaders' Conference at the Novi Sad Museum on the Petrovaradin Fortress primarily focused on the drafting of the Danube Strategy. Head of the Vojvodina government Bojan Pajtic and European Commission Regional Policy Director Nathalie Verschelde addressed the the audience of some 50 young people from all 14 Danube countries. Djelic reminded that the Danube's length in Serbia is 588 kilometers, that the Belgrade and Novi Sad universities and two oil refineries sit on its banks, and that the construction of several more bridges is planned. According to him, Serbia has taken an active role in the preparation of the Danube Strategy and has spent several dozen million euros to clear its banks and purchase navigation systems. The document, which should pass the European Commission in the first half of 2011, will also be the topic of a big conference scheduled to take place at the Vojvodina parliament in October this year.
