Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic saysSerbia is moving quickly towards the EU, and that it should get candidate country status next spring. He also added that local governments were not using the Instrument of Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) funds well enough. "Serbia inefficient in using IPA funds" Speaking at a meeting of the cities and municipalities standing conference committee, Djelic said that the ratification of the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU has begun, adding that Spain and Malta have ratified it so far, while many other countries are expected to do so during the summer. Local governments are not using the IPA well enough, and there are very few projects that could be financed from that source, said Djelic. The IPA will provide EUR 18.5mn in 2011 to implement projects already prepared or undergoing preparation, Djelic noted. According to him, the EU has set aside EUR 135 million for local governments in Serbia since 2007 as part of a seven-year financial agreement. Djelic added that the EU would increasingly focus its support for Serbia on the local level. The deputy prime minister called on the local authorities to apply for projects that were funded from the IPA, adding that those provided an opportunity for Serbia "to show what it was capable of on its path towards the EU".
