Socialist leader and Tirana Mayor Edi Rama called on Albanians to join the protest for transparency in Tirana and all other Albanian cities, the Associated Press reported. He added that a protest would be held every day around the tents. Several hundred miners joined the protest on Saturday. Several hundred police cars and vans were scattered across the main boulevard in Tirana, keeping the protesters and government supporters at a distance. The government organized a concert on Saturday in celebration of International Workers’ Day. After the elections in question, held on June 28, 2009, Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his coalition partners took 75 of the total 140 seat in the Albanian parliament. The Socialists have been boycotting the work of the parliament for months because of the elections they believe were unfair, which is blocking political life in the country. Berisha’s government believes that the opposition’s request for a recount is illegal.
