Telekom Serbia and Telenor cell phone lines and landlines have been out of commission for four straight days in parts of Kosovo and Metohija. This came after the Kosovo Albanian authorities in Pristina aided by Kosovo police, KPS, disabled 40 base stations, in central Kosovo, leaving some 100,000 local Serbs without service. The coordinator of Telekom Srbija's executive unit for Kosovo, Ilija Ivanovic, said that Telekom workers are guarding the base stations in the north. "Telekom workers are patrolling and guarding our property because there are indications that the operation will extend into the north," Ivanovic told Tanjug. He assessed that the destroying stations and transmitters in the north and cutting all telecommunication ties to central Serbia would be “very bad”. "In my opinion, that should not happen right now, because it would raise tensions and could have unforeseeable consequences," Ivanovic warned. Telekom has suffered an estimated EUR 6mn in damages.

Meanwhile, Telekom has posted guards at its base stations in the northern, predominantly Serb areas of the province.

The coordinator of Telekom Srbija's executive unit for Kosovo, Ilija Ivanović, said that Telekom workers are guarding the base stations in the north.

"Telekom workers are patrolling and guarding our property because there are indications that the operation will extend into the north," Ivanović told Tanjug.

He assessed that the destroying stations and transmitters in the north and cutting all telecommunication ties to central Serbia would be “very bad”.

"In my opinion, that should not happen right now, because it would raise tensions and could have unforeseeable consequences," Ivanović warned.

Telekom has suffered an estimated EUR 6mn in damages.
