DRI to start 2009 budget audit

The State Audit Institution (DRI) started work on the 2009 budget spending, Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti reports today. The checks started at the ministries of agriculture, infrastructure, and youth and sports. DRI to start 2009 budget audit This year's audit, only the second in Serbia's recent history, will be more ambitious than the previous one, because as much as three quarters of the state money spent will be checked, according to reports. DRI Council President Radoslav Sretenovic says that all contracts worth more than RSD 3mn will be checked and that salaries, procurement of equipment, purchase of real estate will be put under special scrutiny. He pointed out that seven ministries would be subjected to the auditing procedure this year – down from 14 ministries checked last year. "But now we have chosen departments that 75 percent of the state money goes through," Sretenovic explained and added that National Bank’s financial reports, concerning the state budget, will also be subject to controls. Sretenovic announced that report violations and charges against offenders will not any longer go to the media first, but to prosecutors, "because last years guessing of the names and charges was counterproductive".
