Four years since Milosevic’s death He was on trial accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Kosovo and Croatia, and genocide in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The trial, which had been interrupted several times due to Milosevic’s ill health, lasted four years and ended with his death at the age of 64. After holding high positions within the Communist Party of Serbia, he was elected president of Serbia in December of 1999, in the first multi-party elections after the Second World War. He was reelected in early elections in December 1992. From 1997 until October 2000 he was a president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SRJ). Milosevic founded and until his death led the Socialists Party of Serbia (SPS). Milosevic led a delegation which consisted of three members from SRJ and Republic of Srpska (RS) each at the negotiations in Dayton, Ohio, in November 1995, which ended the war in Bosnia. His 10-year reign ended in October 2000, with the victory of an opposition coalition, known as the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS), whose candidate Vojislav Kostunica ran against Milosevic, and became the next president of SRJ. The Hague Tribunal announced its indictment against Milosevic on May 27, 1999, two months into NATO's attacks on Yugoslavia. He was arrested on March 31, 2001 and extradited to the Hague Tribunal on June 28 of the same year. Milosevic claimed that someone in the Hague Tribunal had taken “active and deliberate steps” to destroy his health and that the judges had denied his request to travel to Moscow for treatment in order to cover it up. The Hague Tribunal prosecutor claimed several times during the trial that the accused was manipulating his own health by refusing to follow the prescribed medical regime. His body was trasported from The Hague to Belgrade on March 15, 2006. The former president was buried in his hometown of Pozarevac in eastern Serbia, in the yard of his family home, where representatives of the Socialist Party (SPS) and the Freedom (Sloboda) Association will place flowers and wreaths at this grave this Thursday.
