"No religious background to murder of policeman"

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic stated that the murder of police officer Zeljko Zecevic did not have ethnic or religious background. Zecevic was killed on March 3 in the village of Ribarici, in southwestern Serbia, by a Muslim man. "No religious background to murder of policeman" Fahrudin Mavric was in a police car after being arrested for disruption of public order and after he caused a traffic accident, the minister told members of the Defense and Security Committee of the Serbian parliament. Mavric, who was not handcuffed, managed to take Zecevic's service pistol and shoot and kill him. Police then conducted an investigation and arrested the suspect at the administrative border during his attempt to cross to Kosovo, Dacic said. Police Director Milorad Veljovic also addressed the committee in Belgrade today and explained that Mavric was in the back seat of the patrol car when he shot Zecevic. The police officer, who was shot in the left shoulder and neck, succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards. When Defense and Security Committee President Dragan Todorovic asked if police procedures had been followed during the arrest, the interior minister answered affirmatively. “It’s a matter of policeman’s judgment, whether the person being arrested will be handcuffed or not,” Dacic said, and added that the killer was not handcuffed after the initial arrest for the brawl and traffic offense, while another man detained along with him "was restrained since he was more aggressive". Veljovic told the committee that 1,724 complaints were filed in 2008 for attacks on police officers, that the number was even higher last year.
