Spain repeats it won't recognize Kosovo

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said that Spain will not recognize Kosovo as independent.

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said that Spain will not recognize Kosovo as independent. He said that the country will not do so until either a UN resolution is adopted regarding the issue, or an agreement has been reached between Belgrade and Pristina. Spain repeats it won't recognize Kosovo Moratinos said that Kosovo has only been recognized by about 60 of the 192 UN member-states, which means that Spain’s stance is in the majority. “If there is security, peace and stability in the Balkans, that is thanks to the decision of the five EU member-states, Spain among them,” Moratinos said, referring to the EU members that have not recognized the Kosovo Albanian unilateral independence declaration, made two yeara ago. According to Spanish media, Moratinos told the Spanish Senate that Serbia is a democratic and pro-European country. According to announcements from the Congress of Deputies President Jose Bono, whom Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic met with on Tuesday, he will be visiting Belgrade in between February 25 and 28. At the same time, two MPs of the Basque Nationalist Party will be visiting Pristina. Moratinos said that Spain would like to cooperate with the Kosovo government during its EU presidency in sectors that are important to the everyday life of the people, such as police and customs. He said that stability must be reestablished in northern Kosovo, adding that cooperation from all sides is needed for this, in order for a multi-ethnic society based on tolerance and respect to be founded. Moratinos also called on Serbia to help stabilize the situation in Bosnia, in order for the country to continue moving on the road of European integration, according to the statement. Jeremic was at the Fuencarral cemetery on Tuesday in Madrid, where he unveiled a plaque to Serbian and Yugoslav combatants who were killed in the Spanish Civil War, stating that the plaque maintains “the need for preserving the historical truth of this period of Spanish history, but also history we share”.
