Workers of the Kragujevac Grain Institute are protesting in front of the Democratic Party (DS) headquarters in the city. They are calling for overdue wages to be paid. Institute workers stage protest in front of DS HQ “We are protesting in front of the headquarters of the Democratic Party because their official has been heading the administration of the center for six years, and that party is directly responsible for the collapse of this agricultural scientific institution,” Union President Blagoje Kovacevic said, adding that the protest would last two hours. He said that the workers are calling for those responsible in the Science and Technological Development Ministry to be punished for not solving the problem of the severla-month-long blockade of the center’s account, and because the last salaries were paid to the frozen account, and are therefore inaccessible to the institution’s employees. Kovacevic explained that the center has 54 employees, many of which have doctorate and masters degrees, along with engineers, who have received their last wages in January of last year. The workers announced blockades in front of the DS headquarters earlier, but since no one was at the premises and the doors were locked, they decided to hold a two-hour protest, stating that they will continue to do this every day until their demands have been fulfilled. “They called us from the Science and Technological Development Ministry to come to Belgrade tomorrow for negotiations, but we do not have a way to do so, not even a car to travel in,” Kovacevic said. The protest today went peacefully, with reporters and police out in force. The center’s employees are demanding the payment of 12 wages, along with contributions for health insurance, and also want the issue of the Institute’s functioning resolved. They have been protesting since October of last year. They gained coverage last fall when they burning their diplomas in protest.
