Any shutting down of the Serbian institutions in northern Kosovo would be unacceptable, Minister for Kosovo Goran Bogdanovic and local officials agreed today. “We will use all diplomatic and legal means to fight for that not to happen. We will continue with our pragmatic and constructive policy toward the international community, and no move of ours will contribute to the destabilization not only in the north, but in all of the province,” Bogdanovic said. Minister meets with K. Serb officials The meeting in Kosovska Mitrovica this Friday was attended by municipal presidents from the north, and the head of the Kosovsko-Mitrovacki District, Radenko Nedeljkovic. Bogdanovic was also heard saying that everything will be done so that Serbia’s institutions in the north “take even more root”, and added that it was thanks to those institutions that local Serbs have not been leaving their homes. “We will not contribute to the destabilization of the situation in the north of Kosovo and Metohija with any move or gesture. We are ready for dialogue, cooperation and reconciliation with all ethnic communities in Kosovo, but we are also prepared to defend our institutions in this territory,” the minister stated. Asked whether he discussed this with EULEX and European Commission representatives in Belgrade, Bogdanovic said that he held a meeting earlier this week, and that he was told that the so-called strategy for northern Kosovo did not have EU behind it, but was drafted by “the interim institutions of Kosovo and the Civilian Office of Pieter Feith”. “In particular, those countries who have not recognized Kosovo will not allow for the problems in Kosovo to be tackled in this manner,” said Bogdanovic. Asked about that more Serbia can do to prevent this scenario, the minister said the country was already undertaking diplomatic activities, that president Boris Tadic will speak about this issue at the UN Security Council session in New York, all in order to “peacefully prevent a flare up of violence in the north of Kosovo”. “Serbs in northern Kosovo cannot accept the interim Kosovo institutions, because they brought nothing good to Serbs in these areas, they even hindered economic development [by introducing customs, VAT and added tax duties], and are in this way burdening the funds that are coming from central Serbia,“ concluded the minister.
