Odzaci, a small town in northern Serbia, has seen an unprecedented number of politicians campaigning ahead of the snap local elections. On the last day of the campaign, with the voting set to take place on Sunday, the deputy Vojvodina government president and also other state, provincial and party officials all flocked to the town. Small town elections garner big attention Elsewhere, most found out that elections would be organized in the town when Vojislav Seselj asked the Hague Tribunal to let him take part in the campaign on behalf of his Serb Radicals (SRS). The parties did not shy from spending big and “engaging huge party resources”, our reporter said, thus demonstrating that every council seat counts. And so it happened that local police was given a new firefighting vehicle today, with the keys handed over by no other than Interior Minister and First Deputy PM Ivica Dacic. Education Minister Zarko Obradovic was also in Odzaci several days ago touring schools in the area, while Vojvodina government President Bojan Pajtic also stopped by to sign a protocol on the construction of a road and restoration of a church – with the members of the interim municipal authorities. The opposition claims that the ruling parties’ activity in the small town shows they are afraid of the voters’ verdict on January 24. The voters, on the other hand, were telling our reporter today that they do not care much about the elections, and were baffled by the number of politicians suddenly in their midst. Meanwhile, the municipal commission that organizes the ballot said ten coalitions and parties will compete as 27 polling stations open on Sunday.
