Labor Minister Rasim Ljajic believes that the government will agree to make all Sandzak municipalities a part of one statistical region. He stated that this was not a political but technical issue which could the jeopardize survival of ruling coalition. Ljajic: Regionalization not political issue “It is important for Sandzak to belong to one region solely because of economical, transport and practical reasons, because this regionalization does not have any political dimension,” Ljajic told Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti. He explained that it was “wrong to start big national debates over an issue which only has influence on everyday life of citizens”. “Many are now seizing the opportunity to score political points. Bosniak [Muslim] nationalists say that this is a proof that Serbia wants to destroy Sandzak and marginalize Bosniaks, while Serbian nationalists think that somebody wants to create a new state,” the minister said. “As for the stories about creating some kind of state of Sandzak, it’s been finished a long time ago. I was against Sandzak’s autonomy and I was called a traitor then. Autonomy is a long gone historical issue and we should not go back to it. It is mission impossible and only a small and insignificant number of people still think about it,” Ljajic pointed out. According to the provision of statistical regionalization plan, the six Sandzak municipalities in southwestern Serbia – Novi Pazar, Tutin, Sjenica, Nova Varos, Priboj and Prijepolje have been divided into two districts – Zlatibor and Raska, and for this reason the Bosniak parties demanded from the ruling coalition to put all these municipalities into one district.
