Interior Minister Ivica Dacic says Croat President Stjepan Mesic's "honorary citizen of Pristina" accolade represents interference in Serbia's internal affairs. Dacic, who is also first deputy PM, told a news conference in Belgrade on Wednesday that this represents a move of the departing Croatian president who does not behave in conformity with Serbia's strong wish to establish friendly relations in the region. Minister slams Croatian president for "interference" "Such moves cannot contribute to overcoming the problems from the past," Dacic said and expressed hope that the new Croatian president would be more willing to develop regional cooperation. According to Dacic, Mesic's move also represents a provocation aimed at Serbia, "that has sacrificed so much in order to establish good relations with all regional states, including those which have recognized the independence of Kosovo". Yesterday, the Kosovo Albanian authorities announced that the outgoing Croatian head of state was proclaimed an honorary citizen of Pristina. A ceremony will be held to this end during Mesic's January 8 visit. Mesic will be meeting with Kosovo officials during his trip to Kosovo, and will also visit the village of Janjevo, where several hundred ethnic Croats live. It was also announced that Mesic would address the Kosovo assembly and that Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu will give Mesic "one of the highest decorations given in Kosovo" during his visit. In Zagreb on Tuesday, Mesic accepted the credentials of the ambassador Pristina sent to Croatia, Valdet Sadiku. “The recognition of Kosovo was not aimed against anyone,” Mesic said, adding that the recognition was “a result of the policy of recognizing the new reality.” Sadiku said that the Croatian recognition of Kosovo was very important because it came from a "neighboring and friendly" country, with which "close relations have been built and with which relations will be further strengthened.” He also "thanked Croatia for its support in bilateral relations and in the international scene", according to a statement. Croatia recognized the Kosovo Albanian unilateral proclamation on March 19, 2008, and diplomatic relations were established in mid-2008.
