Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic said that the government will soon find a solution for protecting the interests of workers, daily Vecernje novosti reports. He said that his cabinet is adamant about fighting misuses and corruption in business. “Government to protect workers" Cvetkovic said that there are two common situations seen in poor privatizations in which the owners of the companies do not pay workers regularly. “The first are the ones in which companies are bought by those that don’t know how to run a business, forcing the companies into bankruptcy and destroying them. The other is a lot more common and dangerous. It is when the new owners know what they are doing and are taking the property of the company and leaving the workers without wages and contributions,” Cvetkovic said. On the Prime Minister's initiative, the government has been preparing mechanisms for laws that will punish employers that neglect their employees. A government source told the daily that 78 contracts for buying public capital were called off, usually because the initial funds were not paid, or because of dealings with property or an unsustainable continuity of work and lack of social program. Sources say that regulations will be changed soon to enable the state to react more effectively and faster in cases of obvious misuses by the buyer of a company. Lists are being put together by the Interior Ministry of privatized companies whose owners are suspected of breaking the law, the daily stated. According to unofficial statistics, more than 50,000 people in over 100 companies in Serbia were on strike this year because of employers that reportedly did not respect the collective or buying agreements of the company.
