Striking workers of GIK Prvi Maj company, who have been blocking the railroad in Lapovo for ten days now, say they radicalize their protests. Hopes that the privatized construction company's workers and its owner might reach an agreement on meeting the strikers' demands, which include payment of 11 overdue wages, were dashed today. Prvi Maj Union offical Predrag Stankovic says that majority owners from Lapovo are once again trying to avoid seeing through an agreement reached with the help of the Ministry of Economy, stating that workers will make the protest "more radical". “We accepted the minimal offer for all the workers to receive RSD 16,000 by November. How is that too much and how is that blackmail? This situation is impossible. We are prepared to do anything and we will find a way to radicalize the strike." Workers spent the ninth night last night in a tent on the tracks in front of the train station. According to Stankovic, their health is quickly deteriorating but they are planning to continue the protest despite the heavy snow and the cold. “We have 15 workers with high fever. I have a cold too, but we'll continue to fight and we will not give up the protest,” he said. Stankovic added that the protest was not politically motivated and that it was a consequence of the worker’s difficult social position. (FoNet, file)
