The Israeli embassy in Belgrade yesterday evening organized a traditional celebration to mark the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. The holiday, which is being marked by Jews in Serbia and all over the world until Friday, is considered to be one of the most joyous in Jewish culture. President takes part in Hanukkah celebrations Ambassador Arthur Koll addressed those gathered at the embassy by saying that Hanukkah celebrates the victory of the Jewish people and the spiritual triumph of their faith. President Boris Tadic, and leaders of Serbia's major religious communities, also attended. During the eight days of the holiday, Jewish families light one candle each day on a special eight-branch candelabrum. Tadic last night symbolically lit one candle in front of the Belgrade synagogue. He reminded that during this holiday, the past must be remembered as well, and tribute paid to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. The remaining candles last night in front of the synagogue were lit by Serbian Orthodox Church Bishop Porfirije, the Catholic archbishop of Belgrade, Stanislav Hocevar, Mufti of Belgrade Muhamed Jusufspahic, and Serbia's Minister of Religion Bogoljub Sijakovic.
