EP Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin welcomed the statements of Boris Tadic and Bozidar Djelic on Serbia's EU candidacy application plans. The president and the deputy PM said that Serbia would not submit candidacy for EU membership until the country was certain that it would receive a positive answer from Brussels. Kacin: Right messages from Serbia In an interview published by Belgrade daily Danas on Thursday, Kacin explained that until one week ago, the steps that the Serbian politicians had announced had not been in accordance with the real course of events nor had they been consulted upon with relevant partners in Brussels. But Djelic said on Tuesday that Serbia would try to do this as soon as possible, but that the date would be specified only when conditions had been created, Kacin said. "That is the right message, taken by the EU as a proof of Serbia's maturity," said the Slovenian politician. According to him, the Serbian officials have now finally stated that the decision on the date of candidacy application would be harmonized with all relevant EU institutions. He said that is was a good thing that Belgrade understood that the implementation of the Interim Trade Agreement required certain time to be realized. When asked whether the submitting of candidacy before March, when the meeting of the Interim Committee for the implementation of this agreement, would be a wrong move, as there would be no proper response from the EU, Kacin said that the decision on when to submit candidacy is the one that Serbia had to make.
