Serbia expects that those EU member-states which do not belong to the Schengen Area will also lift their visa requirements for the Serbian citizens. This is according to Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, who told B92 that his statement "primarily regards Serbia’s neighbors Romania and Bulgaria". "All EU countries should abolish visas" Ireland and United Kingdom are also not included in the Schengen zone, while Cyprus is yet to implement its rules. “They had to introduce visas for our citizens when they became members of the EU and now we expect that they will be abolished,” deputy prime minister said of Bulgaria and Romania. He added that the visa-free regime also applied to Switzerland, which is a part of the Schengen zone but not a member of the EU. “The decision to lift the visa regime will provide the citizens of Serbia, holders of the new passports, to spend a total of 90 days during a six-month period in the countries of the Schengen zone," Djelic explained. According to him, about 1.3 million Serbians have received new biometric passports so far. The deputy prime minister is hoping that the expected decision to abolish visas imposed on Serbians "will not be the last good news concerning the European integrations”.
