When Serbian officials wish to avoid meeting with visitors from abroad who are "not to their liking", they tend to pack up and leave the country. Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti specifies that these trips are usually explained as being "previously scheduled visits". Serbian politicians "take evasive trips" Cynics might say that gas would sooner flow from Serbia to Russia, than would Economy Minister and G17 Plus leader Mladjan Dinkic sit at the same table with the Russians, the newspaper writes. The situation got even more tense during the recent visit by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to Belgrade, which Dinkic "observed from an appropriate distance". Although his cabinet has been assuring that Dinkic's trip was scheduled "a long time ago", speculation is rife that the minister in fact wished to avoid meeting with the Russian president. This all the more so since the G17 Plus leader publicly spoke against Serbia's energy agreement with Russia, while the Russians allegedly never forgot that. The daily reminds that although Serbia's cartoonists portray Deputy PM Jovan Krkobabic as the official that the Belgrade negotiators keep well hidden during their talks with the IMF – as he won't accept pensions cuts – in reality, it is the central bank, NBS, Governor Radovan Jelasic who has been "making himself scarce". During the last visit of an IMF delegation, Jelasic said the government had "no strategy" for the talks – and left for Chicago, on a vacation. But the governor also denied that he was afraid to take criticism from the IMF, and said instead that his presence at the meetings was not necessary since they did not concern the exchange rate and hard currency reserves, "which is his department".
