Former Republic of Srpska President Biljana Plavsic is still in prison, Swedish Ambassador Krister Bringeus has confirmed to B92. "The Swedish government has decided that she will be released on Tuesday, October 27,” said Bringeus, dismissing reports quoting Republic of Srpska Prime Minister Milorad Dodik that Plavsic had already been released and would be arriving in Belgrade tonight. Plavsic still in prison, says ambassador “Biljana Plavsic will be released on Tuesday, October 27. That’s the decision that my government took today. The reason for that is that she has served two-thirds of her sentence. Under Swedish law, a prisoner can be granted probation on the grounds of good behavior,” said the ambassador. The Swedish government took the final decision to release Plavsic after the Hague Tribunal approved her early release in mid-September. In the meantime, information surfaced that the former RS president had left the Swedish prison of Hilsenberg and was on her way to Belgrade. This information was released by the Srna agency in Banja Luka, which reported that Plavsic was to due to arrive in Belgrade late yesterday evening. However, B92 understands that she was still in the custody unit in Stockholm yesterday afternoon. Her lawyer Peter Altin told B92 that he had spoken with his client at 16:00 CET yesterday afternoon. “Biljana Plavsic has been given the Swedish government’s decision and she will be released on October 27,” said Altin, adding that she was delighted with the news. Dodik, who recently visited Plavsic in prison, said that “Biljana is a free woman from today, and her transfer from Sweden to Belgrade is now being worked on.” Plavsic (79) was convicted to genocide, crimes against humanity and crimes against Bosniaks and Croats in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1991-92, as well as violating the Geneva Convention. She turned herself in to the Hague Tribunal in January 2001, and, in October 2002, pleaded guilty to persecution of Muslims and Croats in 37 Bosnian municipalities in 1992. She was sentenced to eleven years in prison in 2003.
