500,000 people will go on hunger strike today in a campaign organized by B92 to highlight the plight of 10% of Serbia's population, who go hungry every day. Today is World Food Day. To mark the event over half a million people and around 300 companies will present a united front with the haves-not in a B92 campaign called “Hunger Strike against Hunger”. Serbia to go on charity hunger strike Friday Over 100,000 people, several hundred companies, as well as trade unions, restaurants and theaters will be taking part in the one-day action. One of Belgrade’s most popular restaurants, Frans, will remain empty at lunchtime in a symbolic sign of solidarity with 700,000 people in Serbia, including 100,000 fellow Belgraders, who live beneath the poverty line. World Food Day is expected to mark a revolutionary step in raising awareness among those who can help the poor join the campaign, while the Atelje theater will donate RSD 212 from each ticket sold for tonight's performances. “There are people who can't cope by themselves and I think it’s important to show a dose of solidarity of awareness that these people exist,” says actor Branislav Trifunovic, adding that “they really need to be helped until the state finds a way of getting them into a position when they no longer need our help.” The idea of the Food for All project is that the burning problem of hunger in Serbia cannot be addressed by sporadic campaigns, but has to be combated steadfastly. You can support the campaign by calling 301 20 60 or donate RSD 100 (plus tax) by sending a text message to 2500. B92
