Coalition partners Nikola Gruevski and Ali Ahmeti say the dispute over a controversial encyclopedia entry must not damage inter-ethnic relations in Macedonia. Prime Minister Gruevski and Ahmeti, the leader of the Albanian Democratic Union for Integration, said that they “will not allow any individual, politician or citizen to exploit this issue to endanger inter-ethnic relations in the state, and will take efforts to overcome this situation.” Coalition on encyclopedia controversy Gruevski and Ahmeti said that this situation should be resolved through dialogue and respect, and that both men would invest efforts towards removing the controversial parts of the encyclopedia, which was published by the Macedonian Academy for Science and Art (MANU). The coalition partners said that they were disappointed about the parts of the encyclopedia that were controversial, and called on MANU to find a solution to address this issue. In the recently published Macedonian encyclopedia, Albanians were called “Shiptars,” and “highlanders” among other things. Besides the divisive section about Albanians, the encyclopedia states that members of the so-called Liberation National Army that led an armed insurgency against the Macedonian authorities in 2001 was trained by U.S. and British instructors, which has drawn a scathing reaction from those two countries' embassies. The encyclopedia came out about ten days ago and sparked a strong reaction from Albanian political parties, academics and non-governmental organizations. MANU changed the text in the encyclopedia in response, but Albanian parties and academians continue to insist that the book should be withdrawn from the market.
