International media reported that the Pride Parade in Belgrade was cancelled for security reasons and organizers were asked to relocate the rally. BBC and Reuters stated that organizers of the parade found the recommendation to relocate the event to the outskirts of Belgrade unacceptable, and demanded that it be held in the center of the capital. International media comment on Pride Parade cancellation Italian news agency ANSA stated that various ultra-nationalist and extreme right wing groups announced that they would take all measures to stop the parade from happening. ANSA states that the Serbian Orthodox Church openly spoke against the Pride Parade and homosexuals, calling it an “immoral gathering,” “Shame Parade,” and “Sodom and Gomorrah.” The Italian agency added that Belgrade has recently been covered in anti-gay graffiti. BBC added that the ultra-nationalist Movement 1389 called the cancellation of the parade a “great victory for normal Serbia.” German radio station Deutsche Welle and Radio Free Europe also reported on the cancellation of the Pride Parade. International media also reminded that the first attempt at a gay parade in Belgrade, held in 2001, ended in conflict and dozens of injured gay activists and police officers.
