International media reported that the Pride Parade in Belgrade was cancelled for security reasons and organizers were asked to relocate the rally. BBC and Reuters stated that organizers of the parade found the recommendation to relocate the event to the outskirts of Belgrade unacceptable, and demanded that it be held in the center of the capital. ANSA states that the Serbian Orthodox Church openly spoke against the Pride Parade and homosexuals, calling it an “immoral gathering,” “Shame Parade,” and “Sodom and Gomorrah.” The Italian agency added that Belgrade has recently been covered in anti-gay graffiti. International media also reminded that the first attempt at a gay parade in Belgrade, held in 2001, ended in conflict and dozens of injured gay activists and police officers.
