EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic have signed a financial agreement in Brussels giving Serbia's budget EUR 100mn in IPA funds. “I’m sure that it will be seen as an boon to continue legislative and economic reform in the country,“ said Rehn. EU in EUR 100mn boost for Serbian budget “Today we also discussed Serbia’s efforts in the field of EU integration. I commend Serbia’s commitment to European integration and encourage the Serbian government to invest those efforts in all aspects of reform,“ the commissioner added. “The commission is fully committed to Serbia’s European future. She has the potential to move quickly towards the EU and we’ll continue to help Serbia to meet all the necessary political conditions and promote the relevant legislative and economic reforms,“ he stressed. Djelic said that the EU’s assistance had come at the right time. “The proverb about a friend in need being a friend indeed has been borne out in the current situation, which the Serbian budget is finding hard to cope with. The support of EUR 100mn has come at the right time and is an appropriate way of supporting Serbia and its European integration,“ said the minister. “We’ll target the money for the needs of Serbia’s citizens, but we’ll also use it as an added incentive for our further progress towards EU integration,“ he said. “Both tranches, the first of which will be disbursed by the end of the year and the second in the first half of next year, are conditional on cooperation with the IMF on the one hand, and continued EU integration on the other,“ explained the minister. “We also touched on other aspects of our European integration today. Serbia will continue its integration, we’re fully cooperating with the Hague Tribunal, and we expect Serbia’s efforts to implement the trade agreement to be recognized by consensus, which will allow us continue further along our European path,“ said Djelic.
