Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said on Saturday that Serbia has a strong intention to formally apply for EU membership by the end of 2009. According to him, this could come bearing in mind that opposition to such a step is decreasing within the EU. He expressed his conviction that Serbia's citizens will be able to travel to the Schengen zone countries without visas in a near future. The time during which Serbia has been unilaterally implementing the Stabilization and Association Agreement must officially be taken into account in the process of gaining the status of candidate for EU membership, Jeremic said, adding that this was a topic of his recent talks with his Swedish counterpart Carl Bildt.
