Russia finds the shutting down of OSCE's Kosovo mission set up to protect the rights of ethnic communities unacceptable. Itar Tass news agency reports that the Russian government considers such a move, under the guise of scaling down of international presence, unacceptable. Russia warns against OSCE plans "Such steps, sanctioned by no one, are unilateral, and they affect the overall activity under the mandate of that mission," Russia's ambassador to the OSCE, Anvar Azimov, was quoted as saying. Time has shown, he added, that the [Kosovo Albanian] unilateral proclamation of independence has not led to the solution of the fundamental problems in the province. According to reports, Azimov spoke during a regular meeting of OSCE's Permanent Council, dedicated to the report on the situation in Kosovo submitted by the mission's head Werner Almhofer.
