Slovenian IM: Visa-free by year's end

Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro will most probably receive a visa-free regime for travel to the EU by the end of 2009, says Slovenian IM Katarina Kresal.

Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro will most probably receive a visa-free regime for travel to the EU by the end of 2009, says Slovenian IM Katarina Kresal. Speaking at at the 9th Regional Ministerial Conference on Illegal Migration, Organized Crime, Corruption and Terrorism in Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia, Kresal said that Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina still had work to do. Slovenian IM: Visa-free by year's end Austrian Interior Minister Maria Fekter, who is the conference’s co-organizer, added that Macedonia had already met all the EU’s criteria, and that Serbia and Montenegro were well on the way to doing so by the end of the year. According to the Slovenian STA agency, Kresal said that the Western Balkan states’ efforts in conducting police reform, combating terrorism and corruption, and bringing asylum, migration and human rights policy into line with European standards was proof of their willingness for partnership cooperation. Liberalization of the visa regime was the main talking point of today’s conference, while there was also discussion of cooperation in combating terrorism and organized crime in South-West Europe.

Austrian Interior Minister Maria Fekter, who is the conference’s co-organizer, added that Macedonia had already met all the EU’s criteria, and that Serbia and Montenegro were well on the way to doing so by the end of the year.

According to the Slovenian STA agency, Kresal said that the Western Balkan states’ efforts in conducting police reform, combating terrorism and corruption, and bringing asylum, migration and human rights policy into line with European standards was proof of their willingness for partnership cooperation.
