The ruling Democrats (DS) and G17 Plus have accepted an amendment proposed by the opposition LDP to the draft changes to the Law on Information. Thus, the government has secured a majority in parliament for when the bill comes up for voting on Monday, despite the fact that the ruling Socialists (SPS) confirmed that they would abstain from voting. Ruling parties, LDP strike deal over law A statement from the Liberal-Democrats (LDP) in Belgrade this Saturday said that the party has gained support for all its objections and demands, harmonized with the Independent Associations of Journalists of Serbia (NUNS) and the OSCE mission in Serbia. The statement further adds that the draft changes to the existing Law on Information will be accepted, along with amendments that will remove some provisions envisaged in the original, including obligatory deposits for founding media outlets, and shutting down of media in case they have their account blocked for 90 days. At the same time, bankruptcy legislature will be accepted as a method to solve problems, with introduction of a penal policy that will differentiate between "unintentional error and continued violation of the freedom of information". The party also said that it sees as the most important the agreement "that enables for the stability of the European forces in the country to be maintained and strengthened until Serbia receives candidate status for full-fledged EU membership". The statement also said that a strategy for reforming the media-related laws will be prepared "on LDP's initiative via joint work with the government, parliament, expert public, journalist associations and broadcasters, with cooperation from international organizations for protection and improvement of media freedoms". This, the statement concludes, paves the way for "a determined sequence of moves for the adoption of the Law on Broadcasting, the Law on Media Concentration – that seeks to prevent monopoly – and the Law on Advertizing".
