The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) stated that media freedoms are in danger more than ever in Serbia. “The government interventions and measures of aid for the media in the conditions of the economic crisis were not implemented completely, and the ones that were, did not prove to be enough, nor were they effective,” ANEM stated. ANEM: Media freedoms endangered According to the new report, the proposed changes to the Public Information Law “along with the rush in trying to adopt it and the lack of adequate public debate, looks that they will be disproportionate to the goal they wish to reach and objectively endanger freedom of expression.” “The slowness in the implementation and the selective implementation of the existing regulations, on one side, and the rush in adopting the new ones, without the proper analysis of possible consequences, on the other side, further confirms the lack of any clearly defined and long-term media strategy by the current government,” the report concludes. The authors of the report stated that in order to overcome this situation on the Serbian media scene, a societal consensus is needed regarding the goals and direction of the media reforms in Serbia, and if this does not happen the “media scene could topple and have a highly uncertain outcome.”
