Serbia will approach the IMF with a demand for increasing the deficit to 4.5 percent in order to overcome the crisis, according to daily Blic. “Wages and pensions in the public sector will not be decreased additionally, but will remain frozen until there is an increase in industrial activity, which is expected in 2011. There will be no increase in VAT, nor taxes on wages and excises,” Blic’s source stated. Administration Union President Njegos Potezica said that they do support the measures, but that "nothing can change over night". “We will accept reforms and rationalization, but under the condition that they respect all criteria for severance pay,” he said. He added, however, that a difference should be made between employees in the public and communal companies, who are doing jobs for the state, but are financed by the local self-administration, and the administration which offers services to the citizens. The number of employees in education was increased from 113,000 to 131,000 in 2004, only to go down to 125,000 in 2006. Last year, a new record was set in education with a total of 133,000 employees, Blic reminded.
