Bosnian police confirmed that Katay Kamel, aka Abu Hamza, who escaped from a Bosnian prison on July 27, was arrested in Zenica. He was arrested in a joint action of the Zenica-Doboj police and the Bosnia-Herzegovina agency for investigation and protection (SIPA). Abu Hamza arrested in Bosnia Kamel did not struggle or try to flee, and was taken to the prison in Zenica to serve out the rest of his sentence. Police officials stated that he could be given up to 20 days in solitary confinement. Kamel was serving time in the Zenica prison for robbery and unauthorized possession of arms. The prison authorities allowed him to leave on a week-long vacation, from which he never returned, after which the Interpol HQ in Lyon issued a red notice for his arrest. Daily Dnevni Avaz stated that SIPA special units and Zenica police followed his movement in the Smetovi vacation resort region, where he was hiding after fleeing from the city center. He was stopped by police on Friday night and arrested. Kamel was earlier declared a danger to Bosnia's national safety. Originally from Tunisia, he received Bosnian citizenship based on his participation in the 1992-95 war, specifically in the El-Mujahidin unit. He is also married to a Bosnian woman. The Interpol red notice was issued on the request of the Bosnian Federation police and lists all 16 names used by the fugitive. It describes Kamel as a dangerous person and obligates all Interpol members to detain him. It is believed that the fugitive was a member of several criminal and terrorist gangs. In his native Tunisia, he was convicted to 12 years in prison.
