The UN’s position on Kosovo remains neutral, says UNMIK spokesman Russell Geekie. “I do not believe that the UN has been sidelined, but it’s natural that the EU should play a major role given the Western Balkans’ European perspective,” Geekie told daily Danas. "UNMIK still status neutral" He added that UNMIK’s role now was to help address practical issues between Belgrade and Pristina. “The mission will, in order to avoid a vacuum and instability, continue to play a role in those cases when others don’t want it, as is now the case with UNMIK’s administrative role in northern Kosovo and the creation of the necessary conditions for Kosovo to receive a representative in Interpol,” said the spokesman. Commenting on the fate of the six-point plan for Kosovo and the agreement reached by Belgrade and the UN within that framework, Geekie said that many international factors were now involved in that process, the EU included. “The EU now has an operative role in the police, the rule of law is being seen to, and it’s very active in the field. Although UNMIK’s role isn’t overriding as it was in the past, it continues to offer support to advocating practical solutions of benefit to all sides,” he said.
