According to the latest information, nine Serbian tourists died in a bus crash near Luxor in Egypt, the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. This is the still unofficial number given to the Serbian embassy in Cairo by Egypt's police, the ministry explained. MFA: 9 Serbians dead in Egypt bus crash Earlier in the day, Serbian Ambassador Dejan Vasiljevic said he learned from a hospital in Hurghada that 11 Serbian nationals were dead. He said that the bus had been carrying 17 Serbian tourists, including 14 adults and three children. He said that the names of the passengers had still to be released. "The accident occurred early this morning on the road from Hurghada to Luxor, near Safaga, on the Red Sea. Sadly, 11 Serbian nationals have died," he said. The injured were transferred to two nearby hospitals in Hurghadaand Safaga, where they are receiving treatment, while one passenger is undergoing surgery. They will later be transferred to Cairo, the ambassador said. "A delegation from our embassy will visit the hospital in Hurgada and will do its best to inform the public about the details of what occurred," he said. According to Egyptian police, two Egyptians also died in the collision, while 14 people were injured altogether. The police are expected to release a list of the passengers soon, of whom there were 22 in the bus altogether. Perla Turs travel agents from Novi Sad told B92 that 15 of its tourists had been on the excursion to Luxor, and that it was waiting for news of what had occurred. According to unofficial reports, the crash took place last night, caused by a lorry which had been driving on the wrong side of the road. News of today’s accident has caused consternation among Serbian tourists in Egypt, who have received the information from their families, the internet or mobile phone. Egyptian roads are among the most hazardous in the world, being poorly signposted and maintained. Among the main cause of the high number of accidents are careless driving and small fines for driving offenses. The Serbian Foreign Ministry has dispatched a special consular team to take care of all necessary consular work over the coming days, including offering care to the injured, and facilitating the speedy repatriation of the victims’ bodies.
