An office designed to create benefits and support communities has become the "savior" of UNMIK's political activities in Kosovo, writes a local daily. "The office, opened at the beginning of this month, enables UNMIK not to give up on its political activities in Kosovo, despite the reduction of its staff," Albanian language newspaper Koha Ditore says. "UNMIK political activity thrown lifeline" UNMIK spokesman Russell Geekie was quoted as saying that the office is set to continue "with a series of functions, that would otherwise be severed due to the reconfiguration process". "This office enables UNMIK to listen to and oversee the daily problems of communities in Kosovo," said he, and added that "the new political character of the mission includes engagement for ethnic communities". "We also facilitate the work of international organizations or donors who seek a UN framework for their activities in Kosovo. Coordination in the field with all international partners is the key of our work in this area," said the spokesman. The daily writes that "despite the fact it has become UNMIK's savior, the office is yet to realize any concrete projects dedicated to communities in Kosovo". But Geekie was quoted as saying that the mission had received significant support for its new activities, "which was demonstrated during the last UN Security Council meeting dedicated to Kosovo". Kosovo Albanian institutions, however, do not support UNMIK, the report suggested. "Kosovo's institutions have asked for the mission to end its work at the Security Council as well," writes the newspaper.
