Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen has informed Belgrade that he has canceled a scheduled visit to Serbia on July 21. Verhagen’s decision to cancel was announced by his spokesman yesterday, who said that “the visit of Minister Verhagen has been postponed. Talks on relations between Serbia and Holland and the EU will be held later.” Dutch FM cancels trip to Belgrade B92 understands from diplomatic sources within The Hague that the reason for the postponement were the formal and informal announcements by Serbian officials that the sole talking points with Verhagen would be unblocking the European integration process and cooperation with the Hague Tribunal. As an example of statements that incurred The Hague’s disapproval, Dutch media cite Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic’s comments that talks with Verhagen would focus on Serbian cooperation with the tribunal and that he hoped that Holland and other EU members would acknowledge the fact that Belgrade was doing its utmost in that area. The Dutch claim that neither of those two themes were on the agreed agenda. Reportedly, the Dutch minister had only been due to discuss enhancing economic and commercial relations between the two countries, as well as technical aspects of the visa regime. Holland is aware of Serbia’s progress in terms of cooperation with the Hague Tribunal, as confirmed by Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz, but remains adamant that cooperation is still not complete, which was why there is no reason for Holland to alter its position on unfreezing the Stabilization and Association Agreement with Serbia either. The statement released following the cancellation of Verhagen’s trip stresses the Dutch belief that EU foreign ministers were also unwilling to discuss matters linked to the Western Balkans “for the time being.” The Dutch Foreign Ministry states that diplomatic contact will be maintained with Belgrade, and that a new date for the visit will be set after the summer vacation.
