Croatian Pres. Stjepan Mesic says new PM Jadranka Kosor’s manifesto should be modernized and that the government can only survive if it makes radical changes. “What could be heard during the debate in parliament and what the prime minister is proposing is, in fact, a defense of the manifesto thus far, which needs to be slightly modernized somehow,” said Mesic. Mesic calls for "radical changes" Asked by a Croatian TV journalist whether the government had the strength for radical changes, the president replied that that was its only hope for survival. Commenting on former Ivo Sanader’s sudden resignation, Mesic said that that “abrupt decision” certainly did not take place without the “bang that had to happen.” Asked whether that meant that the right wing within the Croatian Democratic Community (HDZ) had triumphed, the president said that Sanader had done a lot to reform the HDZ, transforming it from a movement into a party. He added, however, that he now got the worrying impression that certain individuals wanted it to revert to being a movement. Meanwhile, the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) has confirmed its support for the new administration, adding that it expected it to address the problem of the return of refugees, said party leader Milorad Pupovac. Pupovac said that the SDSS supported the government’s stability measures, which was why he endorsed its formation. “However, the question of stabilization measures also covers a continued focus on the problems of the return of refugees, reconstruction, housing issues, be it through the housing program or some other way,” he said.
