Thus far in 2009, 60 Serbian Army (VS) officers have gone to the U.S. for one year of training, where they achieved a high level of success. U.S. military attaché Eric Von Tersch said that in the coming year, 50 more officers from Serbia would be receiving training. Color bearer Goran Radic has just returned from training in the U.S. What he learned in Fort Bliss, Texas, he will try to apply in Serbia—how to better prepare sub-officer personnel. “I was able to get in the top 20 percent of students with my work and results. Of 664, I was in the top 126. This reflects not only on me, but on all of our soldiers who’ve achieve good results in training. They respect our army as professional and competent soldiers,” he said. He said that his time in Texas had not been difficult because his family had been with him. “Texas is interesting. Just like in Westerns. It is pretty warm, the weather is completely different. We got lucky there, because unlike here, it is not humid,” Radic said. Major Damir Slijepcevic, who is going to Kansas soon, believes that he will learn a lot there. “All experiences can be applied, especially those garnered in America, which is taking large steps ahead in terms of military technology and working on the decision-making process and their implementation, and that is useful for any army, the Serbian included,” Slijepcevic said. He said that no one resented him for going to America. “Those are things that happened in our past lives or past periods of our lives and I think that these things must be overcome, forgotten and we should move ahead, create new ideas and new integrations. We cannot be enemies forever,” he said. Von Tersch said that he was often asked why the U.S. was investing so much energy and money in the schooling of Serbian officers. “You should take this as it is. This is a sign of trust between Serbia and the United States. You send us your best officers, and we open to them out entire schooling system,” he said.
